When staying the same starts to cost more

September 15, 2026•1 min read

There's a price for staying the same. I paid it for years before I understood what it was.

For a long time, I sat on the fence. I knew something wasn't right. I also knew that changing it meant walking into something I couldn't quite see the shape of yet, and that was frightening enough to keep me where I was.

And I had never once stopped to count the cost.

So I stayed.

Uncomfortable, but a known kind of uncomfortable.

Then one day, the idea of staying this way became a price I wasn't willing to pay.

That's the moment.

Not so much a decision as a tipping point.

Looking back, I understand why change can be so hard to hold onto. When I came up against the discomfort, part of me wanted to return to what I already knew. There's something strangely comforting about the familiar, even when the familiar isn't working anymore.

And sometimes, going back really does feel easier.

Right up until it doesn't.

I don't think that moment can be forced. At least, I know it couldn't be forced for me. I had to reach the point where staying where I was cost more than stepping into the unknown.

What I can tell you from the other side is that when that shift finally happens, something changes inside you. You can't go back anymore. You can't unknow what you know now.

And surprisingly, that can feel more like relief than loss.

So if you're sitting on the fence right now, you're not failing.

Maybe you just haven't reached your tipping point yet.

And when you do, you'll know. That's often the moment you start reaching out for support.
